Healthcare for the Homeless-Houston
Healthcare for the Homeless "promotes health, hope, and dignity for Houston's homeless through accessible and comprehensive care." I have never found another agency like Healthcare for the Homeless-Houston. If there are any other organizations, like this, please let me know. In the meantime, emulate.
For more info, please check out their website.
From: About Healthcare for the Homeless - Houston
Healthcare for the Homeless - Houston (HHH) originated from an initial partnership between Baylor College of Medicine and SEARCH Homeless Project. After several years of providing medical services to Houston's homeless, the need to integrate care from a broader perspective became evident. Extensive discussion and planning by numerous community-based homeless agencies and healthcare providers led to the formation of the HHH Advisory Council, which is comprised of representatives from the organizations, together with homeless ombudsmen. In 1999, the Advisory Council determined the need to create an independent nonprofit corporation to more effectively utilize scarce resources through cooperative planning.

Freedom Writers Foundation
Another GREAT movie was Freedom Writers with Hilary Swank. Freedom Writers chronicled the true story of how a classroom of students were inspired by the Diary of Anne Frank to authentically journal their own lives and challenges. The Freedom Writers Foundation was created "to form a community like the one we formed in Room 203, where people feel safe, accepted, and understood."

Happiness
What makes a community of people happy? It depends on the culture. Policy makers are taking notice, however. According to an article that appeared on the BBC Online, Nigerians are the most happy and the people of Denmark have become more satisfied over the last three decades.

The Secrets of Okinawa's Elderly
Hmmm....I love fat, salt and sugar and I want to live long and be healthy. But, it seems there's evidence that although it's possible to live a long and healthy life, the fat, salt and sugar needs to be removed from your diet. Darn. I found this article on AOL that was actually from CNN. I must do more research on this one. :)
From: AOL Article on The Secrets of Okinawa's Elderly
(Dec. 8, 2008) -- In Okinawa, Japan, it's not unusual to see people in their 90s and older running, dancing, or even climbing trees. Illnesses like cancer, heart disease and Alzheimers are almost unheard of. The island has the world's highest percentage of people 100 or older.
What is Okinawa's secret? CNN spoke to a gerontologist who has studied life there for 15 years. He pointed to a range of factors, not the least of which was a diet low in fat, salt and sugar. Okinawans remain physically active well into old age, enjoy a strong sense of community and have access to good health care.

This is a really interesting group. Imagine advising the world's leading philanthropists. I am impressed with the initiatives that they have taken on and impacted. I have to applaud Trevor Neilson who is behind this group, I think it his group, for the great job of advising Brad Pitt, Angelina Jolie, and Bono, to name a few on their humanitarian contributions. Bravo to all of you and keep up the very great work that you are doing! This is a great example of the power of pulling together for the greater good. There is so much that can be done and together everyone achieves me; it's trite but true!

Global Business Coalition GBC
The Global Business Coalition is an NGO, a non-governmental organization, that focuses on AIDS, TB and malaria. I was excited to find out about them and encourage you to learn more by going to their website.
From: About the Global Business Coalition
Applied Knowledge and Collaboration Get Life-Saving Results
GBC occupies a unique place in the community of NGOs—a pivotal place. We apply the private sector's special capabilities to the fight against HIV/AIDS, tuberculosis and malaria. We are an unusual NGO, one comprised entirely of businesses.
Coalition members "re-purpose" their business know-how, infrastructure and reach into tools for improving public health. Combined with the work of nonprofits, multilaterals and governments, this translates into more lives saved. Business also helps turn saved lives into productive lives.
Chevron Corporation Vice Chairman Peter Robertson sums up the GBC role this way: "We have resources, but we're not experts in disease. GBC helps us apply our resources where they can really make a difference."
Says former UNAIDS head Peter Piot, "GBC is defining a new economic development model."

Ron Clark Academy
I am a huge movie buff and came across The Ron Clark Story with Matthew Perry. I can't recommend it enough. A true story, Ron Clark transformed a class of students at a Harlem school who had been given up on by themselves, the school and their families. These students excelled beyond anyone else in the school according to the movie. So successful was Ron Clark's transformation that he went on to establish the Ron Clark Academy in Atlanta. He shares his tips and techniques in his book "The Essential 55," 55 Rules that he used in that first class. The first rule is "We are family."

About Kiva: Poverty Elimination, Microfinance
Kiva is an awesome non-profit that brings funds to small business entrepreneurs all over the world in order to alleviate poverty. Please learn more by visiting their website, connect with them and emulate.
From About Kiva
We Let You Loan to the Working Poor
Kiva's mission is to connect people through lending for the sake of alleviating poverty.
Kiva is the world's first person-to-person micro-lending website, empowering individuals to lend directly to unique entrepreneurs in the developing world.
The people you see on Kiva's site are real individuals in need of funding - not marketing material. When you browse entrepreneurs' profiles on the site, choose someone to lend to, and then make a loan, you are helping a real person make great strides towards economic independence and improve life for themselves, their family, and their community. Throughout the course of the loan (usually 6-12 months), you can receive email journal updates and track repayments. Then, when you get your loan money back, you can relend to someone else in need.
Kiva partners with existing expert microfinance institutions. In doing so, we gain access to outstanding entrepreneurs from impoverished communities world-wide. Our partners are experts in choosing qualified entrepreneurs. That said, they are usually short on funds. Through Kiva, our partners upload their entrepreneur profiles directly to the site so you can lend to them. When you do, not only do you get a unique experience connecting to a specific entrepreneur on the other side of the planet, but our microfinance partners can do more of what they do, more efficiently.
Kiva provides a data-rich, transparent lending platform. We are constantly working to make the system more transparent to show how money flows throughout the entire cycle, and what effect it has on the people and institutions lending it, borrowing it, and managing it along the way. To do this, we are using the power of the internet to facilitate one-to-one connections that were previously prohibitively expensive. Child sponsorship has always been a high overhead business. Kiva creates a similar interpersonal connection at much lower costs due to the instant, inexpensive nature of internet delivery. The individuals featured on our website are real people who need a loan and are waiting for socially-minded individuals like you to lend them money
